Mt. Slamet is the second highest mountain in Java (3.432 meter
above sea level). There are three routes leading to the
mountain; one from west side of the mountain, one from Batu
Raden and another from Bambangan, out of which is the
shortest route to the mountain.
When Sir Frances Drake an explorer and an English
naturalist in 1600s, from Indian Ocean he saw the peak of
mount Slamet, and he landed his ship in Cilacap a small town
beach near mount Slamet in Central Java.
Mount Slamet or Gunung Slamet is an active stratovolcano
in Central Java, Indonesia. It has a cluster of around three
dozens of cinder cones on the lower southeast-northeast
flanks and a single cinder cone on the western flank.

craters are found at the summit. Historical eruptions have
been recorded since the eighteenth century.
To go to Bambangan, we should ride bus from Purwokerto to
Purbalingga and from Purbalingga to Bobotsari. From
Bobotsari we can travel trough villages surrounded by many
trees to Penjangan village by truck. This is the last
village that allows cars and vehicles to pass trough. It
takes about another 1 hour trekking to Bambangan from
Penjangan villages. There is an Information Center, were
mountaineers can get information. We may take a rest in this
place, too. We can hire a guide in Bambangan.
From Base camp Bambangan we start to hike up hill, after
15 minutes walk we must across a small river without bridge,
so sometimes it is dangerous went the hard rain fall on the
mountain, can make flood. After crossing a river, we will
enter some vegetables fields, the path is sandy and open
area, it is very hot in the day light.
after 1-2 hours walking, we enter pine woodlands and a
beautiful tropical forest on the uphill; Before reaching
Samalantu (2, 900 masl), we will find bench for rest and old
dilapidated hut, where the mountaineers usually take a rest
or an overnight stay.
Climbing for about an hour, we will reach Sampiyan
Jampang that is border of the forest where we can take a
look at the sunrise. This place is large enough to make some
tends, waiting for sunrise make a rest.
To reach to the peak, we must climb for about 1 hour.
Some big stone can roll from above and become dangerous for
the climbers. We must climb carefully, make sure to step on
the stable stone, unstable stone can roll down.
From the peak, we can enjoy exotic panorama towards a
broad lava plain and active crater as well. A huge explosion
happened in this crater on July 13, 1988.
