Belum lagi pesona kawah Sinabung setia memuntahkan uap panas.

Selamat Mendaki.

Mount Sinabung is a Pleisto-cene to Holocene stratovolcano of andesite and dacite in the Karo plateau of Karo Regency, North Sumatra, Indonesia, 25 miles from Lake Toba supervolcano. Many old lava flows are on its flanks and the last known eruption, before recent times, occurred in the year 1600. Solfataric activities (cracks where steam, gas, and lava are emitted) were last observed at the summit in 1912, but no other documented events had taken place until an eruption in the early hours of 29 August 2010. With the 2010 eruption, Sinabung joins other, long inactive volcanoes such as Fourpeaked Mountain in Alaska which have erupted in recent years.

Sinabung, which rises to 2454 m to the west of Berastagi, is another popular climb. There are now three routes up the volcano. The longest established is well marked, the other two are less obvious, but even so it is probably unwise to undertake it without a guide heavy rain and mist can make it very dangerous. Seven people disappeared here in 1996/1997, when mist made it impossible for them to find the path. Maps are available from the Sibayak guesthouses.

To climb the mountain without a guide, catch a bus to Danau Lau Kawar (one hour, 6000Rp). The path from the village passes a restaurant; fork left just after the restaurant (do not continue along the main path). This path then passes a house and on the left you will see a small hut; you need to turn left again onto another path that passes the hut. The route then works its way through the forest for one hour and is relatively well marked with arrows and string. As the path leaves the forest it becomes very steep and enters a rock gully (also steep). The route passes an old campsite and then a cliff overhang decorated with graffiti. (This makes a good shelter in bad weather as hot steam issues through vents.) After around three to four hours in total, the path reaches the summit; paths skirt the crater lip but care is needed.

To climb the mountain take good hiking boots, a jumper, a change of clothes, and a water bottle. Tents can be hired from the Sibayak guesthouses. Leeches can sometimes be a problem.

Note The Tourist Information Service recommends that visitors take a guide with them on mountain hikes as the weather is very unpredictable and the thick jungle on the flanks of the mountains leads into the massive Gunung Leuser National Park where it is very easy to get lost. The Tourist Information Service and Ginsata have a list of recent tourist mishaps on the mountain, including details of an Austrian tourist who got lost on Sibayak in 2007, and was found nine days later unconscious in a garden in a small town on the edge of the park. He claimed he was led further into the jungle by the ghosts of two German tourists, missing since 1997, a claim locals, with their appreciation of anything connected to the supernatural, seem to believe heartily.

Berastagi (meaning "rice store") is a town and subdistrict of Karo Regency situated on crossroads on the main route linking the Karo highlands of Northern Sumatra to the coastal city of Medan. The village rose to significance when Dutch settlers in Sumatra opened a boarding school there in the 1920s.

The main economic activities in Berastagi, centre on the colourful fruit and vegetable market and on tourism. Berastagi is famous for its passion fruit. The main attractions of the town are the two active volcanoes; Gunung Sibayak, with its hot springs, and Gunung Sinabung.

The town is also a stop on the way to Lake Toba. The dominant ethnic and linguisitic group is Karo Batak.

Berastagi is 11 km from the Regency government in Kabanjahe.

Lau Kawar Lake

Kawar/Lau Kawar Lake is one of the tourist attractions in Karo Regency ranged about 100 hectare. The distance from Medan City is about 85 Km. This tourist attraction crowded with domestic and foreign tourists on Saturday and on Sunday as well as on holidays.

Legend Of Lau Kawar The rice harvest season has arrived in Kawar village. The entire citizen was happy with the rice crops that had turned yellow and ripe. Likewise the Kawar village chief was definitely delighted since he had a very wide field. What the village chief hoped for now evidently was granted in this year. As the expression of gratitude to God, the Kawar Village chief held a Guro-Guro Aron Drum party in his field for four day and four the night. The entire citizen was invited to that extraordinary party.

Because the invitation was send by the village chief no one dare to refuse the invitation except an old woman, the mother of the village chief. This woman was alone in the house, while all of her child and grandchild went to the party. Continuously some faint drum voices from time to time could be heard from her bed. Around midday the danced was stopped for lunch break. The village chief and the whole villagers were having luxurious and abundant lunch. Beef and goat as well as pig and chicken were served in the meals; everyone was full, satisfied and happy. But this was just the first day.

After resting for a moment, the dancing and singing was continued came guided by the village chief's child. Strangely while dancing in the afternoon the village chief called his small child, apparently he remembered his mother who was left was alone and hungry at home.
